Investment thesis

The convenience retailer has delivered four consecutive earnings beats averaging 17% above consensus — including a 32% beat most recently — underpinning a strong near-term growth narrative, but the stock has moved past its analyst price target at a forward P/E above 37 times, leaving little room for error; the setup favors holding existing positions but not adding at current prices.

About Caseys General Stores, Inc.

About Caseys General Stores, Inc.

Casey's General Stores operated 2,904 convenience stores across 20 states as of April 30, 2025, roughly half concentrated in Iowa, Missouri, and Illinois, after its November 2024 acquisition of Fikes Wholesale added 198 CEFCO-branded stores including the company's first locations in Texas, Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi. Retail fuel is Casey's largest revenue product, while prepared food, dispensed beverages, and grocery/general merchandise together generated about 34% of total revenue.

Casey's earns revenue from two main streams: retail motor fuel, sold on a self-service basis at nearly all locations, and in-store merchandise including its signature pizza (sold since 1984), a broadening prepared-food and dispensed-beverage program, packaged snacks and beverages, tobacco and nicotine products, and general merchandise. Prepared food and dispensed beverage items carry far higher margins than the rest of the store: over the last three fiscal years they generated about 34% of total revenue but roughly 63% of revenue less cost of goods sold, with prepared food and dispensed beverage margins averaging approximately 58%. The company distributes groceries and general merchandise to most stores from three self-operated distribution centers within a roughly 500-mile radius, using a fleet of about 500 tractors, and self-distributes the majority of its own fuel. Casey's also operates a fuel wholesale network to dealer sites, expanded through the Fikes acquisition, and runs a loyalty program, Casey's Rewards, with more than 9 million members.

Show full overview

Casey's flags cheese as its single largest food cost, a commodity subject to sharp price swings from weather, availability, and global demand that the company says it may not always be able to pass through to guests given competitive pricing pressure. A related but distinct risk sits in nicotine: tobacco and nicotine products have averaged approximately 9% of total revenue over the past three fiscal years, and the company depends on rebates from major cigarette manufacturers to preserve margin on that category — rebates it says are not guaranteed to continue, and whose loss would directly compress merchandise gross margin without necessarily reducing wholesale cigarette costs the company must still pay.
